 Questions to Ask Yourself or Research

  • What do I want my life to look like in 3 years?
  • Do I want to stay in this country or return to my home country?
  • What are my biggest fears? What answers would help calm them?
  • How will this decision affect my children, my finances, and my immigration status?

  • Consult a lawyer in your country of residence
  • Consult a lawyer in your home/passport country (if applicable)
  • Ask about which country’s laws apply to:
    • Division of property
    • Custody and visitation
    • Spousal support
  • Determine if you want to explore mediation or individual representation
  • Ask about residency requirements and visa implications

 Documents to Collect

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificates of children
  • Passports, visas, and residency permits
  • Recent tax returns
  • Pay slips or proof of income (both spouses)
  • Bank statements, investment accounts, pensions
  • Rental/mortgage agreements
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements (if applicable)

 Financial Readiness

  • Understand your income and expenses
  • Begin tracking household spending
  • Open a personal bank account (if you don’t already have one)
  • Research local housing options and costs
  • Consider talking to a financial advisor (ideally with expat experience)

Emotional & Practical Support

  • Talk to a therapist or counselor
  • Confide in 1-2 trusted friends or family members
  • Identify childcare or school considerations
  • Make a plan for how and when to communicate with your spouse
  • Ask: Who is on my team for this next chapter?
