A memory shared by Annika Bruysten of @finally_home_interiors
When we were planning our housewarming, our son had an idea. Instead of the usual gifts, he suggested we ask our friends to bring their favourite book. Something they had already read and loved. The thought behind it was lovely: a read book carries something of its previous owner. A folded corner, a pencilled note, the memory of where they were when they finished it.
We were genuinely taken with the idea. But we already had tons of books, so we decided to do something more selfish instead.
Our house has a wine cellar, beautiful and almost entirely empty. We asked each guest to bring a bottle of wine, and when they arrived they were invited to attach a tag with their name and a short message.
The result is one of my favorite things in the house. Rows of bottles, each one labelled with the name and words of someone we love. When we have friends over for dinner, we can pull out their bottle and open it together. When we open one on a quiet night, we can send a note to let them know we thought of them.
It has turned our wine cellar into something more than storage. Every bottle is a small connection, waiting to be opened.
